Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

Freshwater is a personal novel by Akwaeke Emezi (they/them) full of many layers to unpack as they take us on a journey of exploration centering identity and duality. It focuses on a young Nigerian woman, Ada, who develops separate selves within her as a result of being born "with one foot on the other side." Ada’s perspective is based on the author's realities, as she explores the metaphysics of identity and mental health, plunging the reader into the mystery of being and self.  Akwaeke carves their past trauma and emotional journey into every page, giving us insight into the experiences that shaped them into the person they are today. The overall theme of the book is a reflection on the determination it takes to unpack past experiences and overcome trauma. If you are someone that enjoys a straight-forward story, this book will likely be of no interest to you. For those who love digging out the pieces of a puzzle, the story of Ada’s battle with pain, adolescence and their internal duality will be rewarding in the end.
